Naturally Sweetened Rhubarb Compote

This is a selfish post, as I’m satisfying a craving that just won’t let go. Rhubarb compote (stewed rhubarb?), one of the most unique textures, delightfully seasonal, extremely easy to prepare and for some of us, deeply nostalgic.

We moved to the suburbs when I was 11. This move brought with it a bigger back yard which meant a big garden, already filled with fun and mysterious fruits and veggies that kept popping up before our eyes. We had more raspberries than we knew what to do with (at least above the snout level of our giant dog) and lots of exotic-looking, jungle-y rhubarb plants.

I have been trying to get this recipe up on the blog for a really long time now. It is the picture of disease-prevention, anti-inflammation and immune support. Now that we’re in that post-holiday, new habit-creating time, it seems like the perfect time to introduce my version of the mighty, mighty ‘golden milk’.

We talk about (and use) turmeric a lot on this site, golden milk’s ‘golden’ ingredient. It is one of the most studied and proven anticancer spices in terms of its ability to lower inflammation, support the liver, aid digestion and boost the immune system.

Gingerbread Men (and tips for healthier holiday baking)

There are certain foods that we don’t consider good for our bodies, which are actually very good for our souls. They are different for everybody, they are the foods that give us warm, nostalgic feelings. They are the foods whose aromas waft out from the kitchen and immediately make us feel safe and loved. Those are the feelings we all need to feel more often and are just as important as healthy food and clean air.

The not-so-great part of this equation is that those same foods that give us all of the deep and delicious soul food are often the same foods that are full of sugar and refined carbs. What’s worse is that the more we learn about which foods we ‘should’ be eating (or when, let’s say your daughter obsessively researches the foods you should be eating based on your recent cancer diagnosis), we begin to feel guilty about these comforting soul food experiences, an emotion that cancels out all of the health benefits of the good stuff that you may have been feeling from those old familiar smells and tastes.
