Steamed Veggie & Quinoa Bowl with Garlic ‘Butter’

Steamed Veggie & Quinoa Bowl with Garlic 'Butter'

This recipe may win the prize for the simplest one on this site so far. It is simply steamed veggies with quinoa and melted coconut oil with garlic. Maybe this is why it took so long to make it onto the blog, I don’t know, do you really need a recipe for this? But then someone pointed out to me it’s not always about the recipe but the inspiration to make something. So I hope this inspires you, it really is worth the effort.

I have to admit, this isn’t something I make for us very often. I guess it’s humble enough to forget about by grocery list/dinner-making time. It’s inspired by a stall at the Granville Island Food Court that always sold salad rolls that my sisters and I would get for lunch when we were little (to go with our donut holes and pizza pretzels).

Massaman Thai Curry

I still don’t know how we got this lucky, but the first time I tried Massaman curry was in Thailand, on a beach, made especially for us by a Thai woman who was too modest to call herself a Chef but too passionate not to offer to cook for us once we started talking about food.

We had been frequenting her tiny bar that had only three tables setup on the beach, every night around sunset. Roasted Vegetables with Italian Salsa Verde

Roasted Veggies with Italian Salsa Verde

Every time I go to the farmers market, I get super inspired (sometimes even making recipe notes in my phone) buy a bunch of fresh, gorgeous produce, walk home with grandiose plans and then get busy/hot/other and wind up making this.

Simple roasted veggies (any veggies you guys, fennel, zucchini, garlic heads, mushrooms, kohlrabi, you name it) and a simple fresh sauce to elevate it to a level deserving of this beautiful, local produce.

Since it is literally what I make most of the summer (often in the toaster oven so that I don’t have to heat my place up with the big oven), I thought it was probably worth sharing with you.

Fermented Carrot & Jalapeno ‘Hot Compote’

Fermented Jalapeño and Carrot Hot Sauce

I used to have a jar of sambal in my fridge at all times, as well as backup in my cupboard. I loved spicy food (still do) and this was my fave spicy condiment. That spiciness is addictive, apparently our brain thinks we are on fire and sends out endorphins and dopamine, both of which make us feel great, and leave us wanting more.

Fermented Jalapeño and Carrot Hot Sauce

Unlike other addictive substances/foods –drugs, alcohol, coffee, cheese, sugar, there doesn’t seem to be a downside to spicy food (unless your colon is inflamed, or you’re sensitive to nightshades). Although there are worse processed foods to consume than sambal, if we have the ability to make a homemade version and turn it into a superfood, we’re obviously going to do it.
