Fresh Bok Choy Salad with Apple Sesame Dressing

Fresh Bok Choy Salad with Apple Sesame Dressing

Hi! You may (or may not) have noticed we disappeared for a few weeks. My excuse is boring and kind of gross but it feels great to be back, I’ve missed you all.

Remember the Game of Thrones Season Finale? It seems like it was a long time ago now. We recorded it because we had people for dinner and then stayed up to watch it after they left. It was past our bedtime (any time after 9pm, these days) so between the two of us falling asleep and rewinding it to re-watch parts, it took us about three hours to watch.

Roasted Whole Eggplant with Tahini Sauce & Fresh Herbs

Roasted Whole Eggplant with Tahini and Fresh Herbs

I’m a tiny bit Lebanese, (the part that decided my taste buds and arm hair), which is why I think I am so drawn to the flavours of the Middle East. When I am out, I always order the eggplant. It is sometimes overcooked and often a greasy disaster, but when it is right, it is like magic. And unless I’m with my sisters, I usually don’t have to share :)

Asian Cucumber & Daikon with Sesame Nori Dust

Asian Cucumber and Daikon with Sesame Nori Dust

Do you ever feel like a glass or bottle of water has followed you around all day without ever actually being consumed? You know you should be drinking more water but for some reason actually drinking it never happens? Black Sesame Kale Gomae

You know when you’re starving and you go to a restaurant and can’t wait for them to make your food so you order an appetizer that you know will be quick so that you don’t ruin lunch by being a hangry jerk? That’s how I was introduced to gomae salad.

I have since gotten my blood sugar under control and am generally a nicer person now but my gomae love persists.

Sushi restaurants are abundant where I live. You can get decent sushi on practically every block. I am only reminded that this isn’t the norm in most of the world when my sisters come home from living abroad and want to go for sushi more times in two weeks than I have been all year. That’s a lot of deep-fried tempura potential, so gomae helps to green things up with the help of calcium-rich sesame seeds (…and questionable sugar sources).

Homemade is always better, so of course a recipe for refined sugar-free, raw sesame seed gomae needed to be in my repertoire.
